How to refer

Call, fax or email. That is the whole process.

Telephone the practice with the claim details and the office will book the first visit at whichever of the five locations is easiest for the patient to reach. Records can follow by fax or email the same day. There is no portal to register for and no form to create an account on.

Records go directly to the practice, never through this website. Medical records are protected health information, and this site is built so that none of it ever passes through it. Fax, email and telephone are the routes adjusters and attorneys already use.

What to send

  • Claim number, insurer, and the adjuster or case manager to contact
  • The injury date and a short mechanism of injury
  • Existing imaging reports and any prior operative notes
  • Current work status and any restrictions already in place
  • Whether an interpreter is needed. Dr. Ackland speaks French, Portuguese and Spanish

What the practice provides

Four things a claim may need.

  • Treatment of work injuries

Orthopedic care for the shoulder, knee and elbow with the claim documentation prepared as treatment progresses.

  • Independent medical examinations

Examination and a written opinion on causation, disability and treatment for a disputed claim.

  • DIA impartial examinations

Dr. Ackland is on the Department of Industrial Accidents roster of impartial examiners under Section 11A.

  • Second opinions

A reading of a proposed operation, or of one that has already failed, before a decision is made.

What comes back

Reports written to be used, not filed.

Every visit produces a note that states the diagnosis, the treatment plan, the current work status and any restrictions, in language an adjuster or a judge can act on without a follow-up call. For work injuries the documentation is part of the treatment, not an afterthought, because a claim that stalls on paperwork is a patient who does not get better.

Dr. Ackland is board-certified, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and a certified expert examiner for the Massachusetts Department of Industrial Accidents. He has more than twenty years of Massachusetts workers' compensation experience and is affiliated with New England Baptist Hospital.

Where patients are seen

Offices from Methuen to Fall River, so most injured workers do not have to travel into Boston for a fifteen-minute follow-up. Consultations are booked to the office nearest the patient, not the adjuster.
