Orthopedic Surgeon

A career built around the shoulder, the knee, and the injured worker.

Dr. Ackland treats the shoulder, knee and elbow across the full range of injury and wear. A large part of that practice is Massachusetts workers' compensation, and he is a certified expert examiner for the Department of Industrial Accidents.

He also takes referrals for revision surgery, where a previous operation has failed to resolve pain or restore function, and sees patients for second opinions before a recommended procedure.

He teaches arthroscopic technique internationally and has published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics.

What to expect

Most patients arrive either hurt at work or unhappy with the answer they were given somewhere else. Both start the same way.

  1. Call, or send a request

Tell us briefly what happened and where it hurts. If the injury happened at work, say so, because it changes what we need from the start.

  2. Come in and be examined

Bring any imaging and paperwork you already have. Dr. Ackland or Patrick Evans, PA-C, will examine you and review what has been done so far.

  3. Get a plan in plain language

You will leave knowing the diagnosis, the options, and whether an operation is actually the right answer. Sometimes it is not, and we will tell you so.

  4. Treatment and paperwork move together

For work injuries, the reports your claim depends on are prepared as treatment progresses rather than reconstructed months later.
