Knee Arthroscopies

Post-Operative Instructions for Knee Arthroscopies
  1. Activities
    • There is no harm putting full weight on your knee. You are encouraged to walk as smoothly as possible unless specified by your physician. You may use crutches, but very often they are not necessary. You may experience some discomfort when you walk.
  2. Exercises
    • The thigh muscle will shrink in size and strength quite rapidly unless they are exercised. The evening of the surgery, exercises should be started.
      1. Straight Leg Lifts: Lying on your back, life your lef 10 to 20 times every hour. You may be unable to actually lift the leg, but hold each attempt for 5 seconds and then relax.
      2. Quad set: Laying on your back, press your knee into the mat tightening the thigh muscle and holding for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 to 20 times every hour.
      3. Pump your ankle and foot up and down 20 to 40 times every hour.
    • Please do not do any strenuous activities until you are seen for your follow-up visit.
  3. Dressing
    • A bulky post-op dressing will be applied at the time of surgery. You may
remove this dressing 3 days postoperatively and replace it with new, clean, waterproof household band-aids. You can find the waterproof band-aids at any pharmacy. Your staples/sutures must remain clean and dry until you are seen in the office for your first post-op visit. The staples/sutures will be removed at your first post-op visit.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the office.
